A number of changes made to the apprenticeship program in recent weeks are coming as good news for NSCC Students.
Kevin Gerrior, Manager of Apprenticeship Training says, in particular, allowing one mentor to train two apprentices will help students find jobs.
That’s up from a one-to-one ratio for most industries.
“Graduates would be out doing their work placement an they’d come back and say ‘I had a great experience, the employer would love to keep me on, but unfortunately they already have an apprentice, and they aren’t allowed another one ‘” he says, “You know, they missed out on that job opportunity.”
He says he’s not concerned about a loss of face time.
“If there’s a real good mentor out there, that does a good job of training their apprentices, I’d almost rather them have three apprentices than one.”
Gerroir says he’d like to see more employers get involved with the program and these changes should help.
He says for every dollar an employer invests in an apprentice, studies show they get $1.50 in return.
More young NSians will have the chance to gain valuable on-the-job training w/ changes to NS’s apprenticeship system https://t.co/JoBeFmiy8c
