An investigation into a man who was injured by a police dog while being arrested has been referred to the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT).
According to a release, Lunenburg District RCMP made the referral after an incident May 16.
Members responded to a call involving a complaint of assault where after an intoxicated male suspect left the residence with a firearm.
The victim and three small children remained in the home while members provided security and tried to locate the suspect.
After determining the suspect was in a wooded area near the home, a police dog and the Emergency Reponse Team were called to assist with the arrest.
While awaiting those resources, the suspect attempted to get into the residence but fled again after seeing police in the home.
Later, the police dog was used to track and locate the suspect on Highway 3.
During his arrest, he was bitten by the dog and was taken to hospital for treatment.
He remained in police custody and was transported to jail this morning.
The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
Because SiRT is investigating the matter, RCMP cannot comment on the incident.
