A proposed cell tower won’t be coming to Queens after all.
Region of Queens council voted down a telecommunications tower after much public opposition.
Eastlink was looking to build the 61 metre structure on a private property on Meadow Pond Road in Liverpool to increase their cellular service in the area.
They needed permission to enter into a development agreement from council, partially because the property is zoned R6 – a Mixed Use Coastal Residential Zone.
Residents voiced concerns at two public meetings over the impact on the landscape as well as supposed negative health effects.
Mayor David Dagley says council listened to residents when they unanimously voted down the tower.
“I don’t have the answer as to why each councillor voted the way they did but I can tell you that councillors voted their conscience.”
Stephen Banks, site acquisition manager with Eastlink, was at the council meeting today.
He says Eastlink could have increased data coverage in a four to six kilometre radius and brought coverage to an area they referred to as a “dead area.”
Dagley says the community is open to new business but admitted the decision may put off cell and internet providers in the future.
“Given the result of today’s decision I believe it will be a concern moving forward.”
