The Municipality of Chester will not provide a live stream or audio recordings for its regular council meetings.
A request was made by The New Ross Regional Development Society.
President Scott Hamlin says many members of the community would like to see or hear what goes on at the council table and are unable to attend.
Warden Allen Webber says there were concerns about grandstanding during a live feed instead of having open discussions.
“I don’t think we’re trying to be less transparent or less open,” says Webber.
“That’s not the intent.”
Webber says they hold community meetings, issue a municipal newsletter and have an online engagement platform called ‘Voices and Choices’ for people to access municipal projects or ask questions.
They also post their meeting agendas online ahead of time for the public.
Other municipal units have successfully adopted live streaming or audio recordings of council sessions including the Region of Queens, District of Lunenburg and Bridgewater.
