The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg hopes to lessen the struggles faced by residents and businesses during COVID-19.
The municipality will not be charging interest on overdue tax payments starting on June 1st.
The interest rate will return to the normal rate of 10% after August 31st, 2021.
Municipality of the District of Lunenburg Mayor, Carolyn Bolivar-Getson hopes this will help offset some financial struggles brought on by COVID-19.
“We do understand that their are financial hardships,” Said Bolivar-Getson.”People are not doing their regular work, businesses have not had the sales that they normally would have, so hopefully this will alleviate the financial stress put on residents and business owners.”
Meanwhile, Property Tax Exemptions for low income homeowners have become easier to apply for.
The municipality has removed the need for a signed Statutory Declaration witnessed by a Barrister or Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, the Mayor or Councilor (sworn as a Commissioner), or a Notary Public of the Province of Nova Scotia.
This means homeowners are now only required to sign the application themselves.
Based on household income, homeowners making under $29,999 are eligible to for up to $500 in relief from their property tax bill.
Home owners can apply for the Property Tax Exemption by clicking HERE.
The application deadline is August 1st.
