On a hot day when a lot of us are wishing we could just lay on the beach until we get hot and jump in the water and repeat, I have a topic connected to the sea. This year we celebrate the Bluenose being launched into Lunenburg harbor 100 years ago.
She was/is a ship with a lot of history. Over the past century the Bluenose was a champion racing schooner, a champion fishing vessel. Sunk as a cargo ship. Then was reborn as the Bluenose II thanks to a brewery and became our provincial sailing ambassador. Most recently she was rebuilt a third time in 2013. That last rebuild became a political controversy over the cost, design upgrades and delays.
I was lucky enough to have a tour of the ship as she was being built this last time. Being there for the latest launch was a neat experience too. I know the original launch a century ago was likely bigger, but still it was a neat to be there for the latest event.
As we celebrate he 100th anniversary of the Bluenose, you should plan to take a drive to her birthplace, Lunenburg. The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic has a great display where you can learn more AND you can even visit the blacksmith shop that did the iron work for the original vessel! It is a distillery now, but the forge is still there as you walk into Ironworks.
Tomorrow there is another event planned to celebrate the centennial of the Bluenose as an official stamp will be launched live at 11am!
