Today is Earth Day. Last night my 3 year-old started asking questions about the Earth, just out of the blue. During our conversation on how even though we live in a house, we still live on the Earth, I mentioned that today is Earth Day. He asked what that is and the best way I could describe it is ‘Earth Day is a day when we try to do what we should be doing all the time to help keep the Earth clean and healthy’.
I remember as a kid Earth Day focused on liter a lot. Maybe it’s because I was a kid, or because way back then a lot of today’s issues didn’t exist, haha. But when the hole in the ozone layer became the talked about thing and using aerosol cans became a big no no, that seems to be the turning point for mother Earth. Now what is facing our planet is scary to say the least.
There are 10 catastrophic threats facing humans right now, and coronavirus is only one of them
There are those that claim the suggested fears for our planet are false, but have you not noticed how different the weather is?
I have seen the glacier in western Canada at the ice fields a few times, a decade apart and there was no trouble to see the shrinkage.
Try growing grass on the South Shore without limestone added, a lot harder than I remember when I was a kid and some say acid rain is part of the reason.
I would never pretend to know what I am talking about. I just sit in a padded room each morning on the radio and to add to that, I raise cattle and we all know that cow farts are ruining the world… That is what I am told, seems horses and dogs are exempt, haha.
I did notice though, during the pandemic, even with no major change in the number of bovines on the planet, when travel stopped the air cleared. I swear when planes started flying again there were times I could count the engines when they flew over and the sky was bluer than blue.
So what should we do today for Earth Day? Just be aware. The cars that throw their fast food bags out the window as you travel the Lower Branch Road on a regular basis, keep it inside and throw it in the garbage. The people that leave their garbage on side of the dirt road, why not drive to the Community Recycling Centre? It is free to drop off your garbage, up to 100 pounds (I think that is the limit), and you can travel paved roads to get there. AND reuse when you can.
Common sense would fit nicely to help us carry good habits forward from today, Earth Day.
