I remember when the train used to go by our house, our dog Nugget used run to bark at it as it went by.
I also remember when the tracks were pulled up, the excitement of having that trail to enjoy on my bike. A lot has changed since then and now the trail system gives the perfect opportunity for a scenic walk or bike ride along the Lahave River. I knew the Centennial Trail was popular, but I didn’t realize just how busy it is until yesterday. I was helping a friend fix the fence that borders the trail and there was a constant string of people enjoying the trail all afternoon.
I often hear people talk about some of the routes they have hiked and the old railroad system is just one of many options. I would have to say if you are thinking of getting into hiking, the old railroad tracks are a great place to start. They are relatively level with nice terrain to walk on and they are always leading somewhere, so it is a lot harder to get lost on the tracks. It is always a good practice to be prepared, the Cub Scout in me, haha.
Here is a list of things to get in the habit of having when you hit the trails.
Hiking in Nova Scotia
What to Bring
- Map
- Compass
- GPS
- Water
- Snacks
- Sunscreen and insect repellent
- First Aid Kit
- Whistle
Now if you are looking for options, where to hike… well here are a lot of them and you don’t even have to leave Nova Scotia to enjoy.
If you are willing to travel around the Atlantic provinces, I don’t think that list would even fit on this blog, haha.
Have Fun!
