I love being able to go to the source.
Interviews are always best with the artist and not just a representative. A real item is always better than artificial. As I type that I think of the commercial I saw last night for Synthetic Diamonds???? True story…
LAB CREATED DIAMONDS
I have always felt that it is important to know where things we use in our lives, come from.
A big example of that is food and the many people that assume everything comes from the grocery store. Never giving a thought to how what they eat gets to store shelves and on their table. I have heard many times that meat comes on wrapped white trays from the grocery store. Fruits and vegetables are always perfect and clean and easily gotten from the bin in the produce section. These might seem like extreme examples, but we live in the country. In a large city setting this would not be far off.
This weekend you have a chance to get out and see where your food comes from and visit some local farms. Sunday is the 22nd Annual Open Farm Day.
Atlantic Open Farm Day – Nova Scotia
One of the Nova Scotia farms that will be opening the gates to welcome visitors is a spot I worked at many years ago, Indian Garden Farms in Hebbville. Glenn and the gang are always very welcoming when you travel up the hill. The goats, sheep and chickens welcome visitors regardless of the season, and don’t forget about Tinkerbell, the pig.

Of course you can always take a look at the history of farming with a drive to New Ross. Most of us that were students on the South Shore have visited Ross Farm Museum at least once, but it is always a great time to drop by for a trip back in time at the traditional farm.
Whether you are planning a visit a produce or livestock farm this weekend, or you plan to get your Christmas tree this year from a local tree farm, visit! I will always believe it is important to know where things come from so that the importance of farms is never questioned. Once they are gone, there is no turning back. It is darn hard to grow carrots in pavement.
