Shelburne County’s Giant Pumpkin Festival is on this Saturday, with an added bonus.
For the first time Shelburne will host a regatta, transforming giant pumpkins into paddling racing boats.
Shelburne is taking on the event after low water levels in Lake Pisiquid caused it to be cancelled for the Windsor-West Hants Pumpkin Festival.
Community development coordinator for the Municipality of Shelburne Val Kean reached out to the festival about holding the regatta in the Shelburne Harbour.
“A collegue of mine who lives in Windsor and was aware of the struggles they were having with their water ways suggested I reach out to the Dill Family.”
The Dill Family Farm in Windsor is providing five of the pumpkins for the race, which starts at noon on Saturday in the Harbour.
Keans says she they’re hoping to make the regatta a yearly part of the festival.
“We’re really excited to bring and grow this event here in Shelburne. We’re very happy with the support West Hants has given us.”
There’s also going to be pumpkin carving, vendors from the Shelburne Guild Hall and a giant pumpkin weigh-in with prizes.
All the information is on the Shelburne County Giant Pumpkin Festival Facebook page.
