The RCMP is investigating a recent rash of outboard motor thefts reported in and around Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
Police say at least four motors were reported stolen over several days in areas including Lilydale and Mader’s Cove. The thefts appear to have taken place sometime between May 22 and May 24, though Constable Dominic Laflamme says that with seasonal properties involved, the exact timing can be difficult to pinpoint.
“People aren’t always at their cottages or camps regularly, so there can be a few days or even longer between when the theft happened and when it’s discovered,” Laflamme said.
While officers haven’t confirmed if the incidents are linked, Laflamme says it’s under active investigation.
Outboard motor thefts are not new to the area. The RCMP says it sees similar reports each year as the boating season begins.
Laflamme recommends property owners take precautions, especially if they don’t live year-round on the property. Suggested steps include:
-
Storing boats in areas with surveillance cameras or monitored security
-
Using trail cameras or motion-activated alarms
-
Locking up buildings and using curtains or blinds to block visibility
-
Avoiding storing valuables at seasonal properties
“These are often crimes of opportunity,” he said. “If criminals know people aren’t around, the risk of being caught is low.”
Police are also reminding the public not to try and recover stolen items on their own. If you believe you’ve located a stolen motor online, Laflamme says the best approach is to contact RCMP immediately.
“For their safety, we do not recommend people meet up with sellers themselves,” he said. “Provide us with the ad. If it’s your motor and you can prove it, we can step in from there.”
