A residential home on Shepards Hill Road was destroyed in an early morning fire Friday, just a few hundred metres from the Riverport Fire Department.
The call came in around 3:30 a.m., and crews from Riverport and several surrounding departments responded quickly. Despite the close proximity, the fire had already spread from the back porch into the attic by the time firefighters arrived.
“There’s no determination yet on what caused the fire,” said Riverport Deputy Fire Chief Candace Dare. “However, it did start in the back porch and then fully went up into the attic.”
Thanks to mutual aid from departments including Lunenburg, Dayspring, Hebbville, Pleasantville, Chester, Italy Cross, and Oak Hill, firefighters were able to contain the blaze and protect nearby homes.
“Local proximity was our friend today,” Dare said. “The only challenge is it’s a one-way street, so once you’re in here, you’re kind of in here. But we got water on it quickly, worked as a team, and again—no major casualties or injuries. So win, win, win.”
Crews remained on scene through the morning to extinguish hot spots and ensure the area was safe. “We were able to salvage some items inside and protect the exposures,” Dare added. “The neighboring house behind it was very close, so we were able to stop any damage from over there, which is great.”
No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
