The Nova Scotia government is offering emergency financial support for residents forced from their homes by the Lake George wildfire in Kings County.
Applications open Wednesday, October 8.
Emergency Management Minister Kim Masland said the funding aims to help ease the stress on families who have been displaced. “We know evacuations are stressful. That’s why we’re providing financial support while residents are displaced from their homes,” she said.
The new relief program mirrors the one created for residents impacted by the Long Lake wildfires earlier this year.
Kings County residents evacuated from their primary homes will receive payments based on the number of days they’ve been away.
Adults can receive up to $3,000, and minors up to $1,750, depending on the length of displacement.
The funding is designed to cover unexpected costs such as food, clothing, and temporary accommodation.
Those evacuated from cottages or secondary properties are not eligible. Proof of residency will be required, and support will continue until the evacuation order is lifted or until October 31 — the official end of wildfire season.
The program complements assistance already available through the Canadian Red Cross and the Municipality of Kings County.
As of October 7, 353 properties remain under evacuation, with officials unable to say when residents will be allowed to return home.
The Lake George wildfire continues to burn, with crews monitoring hot spots and flare-ups.
