Orkin Canada has released its latest ranking of the rattiest cities in eastern Canada, based on the number of rat and mouse treatments performed between August 1, 2024 and July 31, 2025.
The list combines both residential and commercial pest control calls and offers a snapshot of where rodent activity is proving most persistent as winter approaches.
According to the ranking, Moncton takes the top spot, followed closely by Halifax in second place. St. John’s ranks third, with Dartmouth in fourth. Rounding out the top five is Montreal.
Orkin says the rankings reflect where its technicians were called most often to deal with rodent problems, not necessarily where infestations are worst per capita. Still, the company notes the data highlights consistent pressure from rats and mice in urban areas, ports, and food-dense environments.
With colder weather driving rodents indoors in search of warmth, shelter, and food, Orkin is reminding homeowners and business operators to take steps now to prevent infestations before they start.
The company recommends trimming shrubs and trees back at least one metre from buildings to remove hiding spots and prevent rodents from climbing onto structures. They also advise eliminating standing water from clogged gutters, trash bins, and outdoor containers, since water sources are essential for rodent survival.
Inside and outside properties should be checked regularly for signs of rodents, including droppings, burrows, and rub marks along walls and baseboards. Early detection makes infestations far easier to control.
With winter setting in, Orkin says prevention now can help avoid more serious and costly rodent problems in the months ahead.
