Former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland has announced she will resign her seat as a member of Parliament this Friday.
The announcement comes as she prepares to begin a new role as an unpaid economic adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
In a Wednesday post to social media, Freeland confirmed she has written to the Speaker of the House to vacate her seat, marking the end of an era for the Liberals.
She first signaled her departure earlier this week after accepting the Ukraine advisory position and stepping down from her role as the prime minister’s special representative for reconstruction efforts.
Freeland served in cabinet in various roles since 2015 before resiging from the front bench in 2025.
She said in her announcement that she is grateful for the opportunity to assist Ukraine’s economic recovery on a voluntary basis.
Her departure will trigger a by-election in her University–Rosedale riding, with the government having six months to fill the vacancy
