South Shore–St. Margaret’s MP Jessica Fancy is explaining why she did not stand during a tribute in the House of Commons for Charlie Kirk, the controversial American political figure who was killed last week.
In a video posted on social media, Fancy said she wanted to be clear about her decision. “I did not stand or clap for that statement alongside of my colleagues,” she said.
She noted that while she believes violence and threats in politics are never acceptable and respects her colleagues who did choose to show support, she felt it was important to consider the broader context.
“Elevating figures who promote division does not contribute to respectful solutions,” Fancy said. “My commitment remains to a politics rooted in dignity, respect, and constructive dialogue. Because that’s how you build a stronger, safer democracy for everybody.”
Fancy, a first-term Liberal MP, was among a small number of MPs who remained seated during the standing ovation.
