Lunenburg’s municipally owned electric utility has taken a major step toward modernizing its services and strengthening its long-term sustainability by joining a regional coalition of like-minded communities.
The town is now part of the Maritime Municipal Electric Utility Alliance (MMEUA)—a growing network of municipalities across the Maritimes that own and operate their own electric utilities. The Alliance focuses on collaboration, shared expertise, and joint efforts to improve reliability, access funding, and accelerate the clean energy transition.
Mayor Jamie Myra says the decision to join MMEUA reflects Lunenburg’s commitment to providing dependable and sustainable power to its residents.
“Joining MMEUA is a positive step for our community,” said Myra. “It allows us to benefit from collaboration across the Maritimes. This partnership positions us to access innovation, funding, and shared services that will only serve to continue to strengthen service for Lunenburg residents.”
The Lunenburg Electric Utility has been municipally owned since 1937 and currently serves approximately 2,300 metered customers, along with several hundred unmetered lighting and service accounts. It provides electricity to Lunenburg and surrounding areas, maintaining local control and accountability.
The MMEUA was launched in early 2025 and includes municipal utilities in Saint John, Edmundston, and Perth-Andover in New Brunswick; Antigonish, Mahone Bay, Berwick, Riverport, and now Lunenburg in Nova Scotia; and Summerside in Prince Edward Island.
Glen Fillmore, Chair of MMEUA and Vice-President of Strategic Growth and Transformation at Saint John Energy, welcomed Lunenburg to the Alliance.
“The utility has a long tradition of local service and strong community connections,” said Fillmore. “By joining MMEUA, Lunenburg gains access to shared expertise, innovative tools, and opportunities to secure funding for smart grid and clean energy projects. Together, we can modernize our grids, strengthen resilience, and deliver sustainable solutions while keeping decisions local.”
The Alliance also enables members to jointly submit funding applications, which has already proven to increase success rates for securing provincial and federal support.
