A workshop on suicide first aid is being offered at Yarmouth Regional Hospital.
The Nova Scotia Health Authority’s Mental Health and Addictions program is parterning with the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation and the Tri-County Women’s Centre to present the two-day interactive session.
The sessions will run on November 30th and December 1st and is open to people 16 and older.
Lisanne Turner with the women’s centre says the ASIST workshop stands for Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training.
“It teaches participants to recognize when someone may be at risk of suicide, and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety.”
She also says suicide is an uncomfortable subject, but one that needs to be talked about.
“it helps reduce the stigma the more we talk about it and the more that community folks are prepared to respond, definitely.”
The goal of the workshop is to have more community awareness and have residents who are prepared to support those who have thoughts of suicide and their families.
The workshop will be held in the Bluenose Conference Room at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days.
