A Lunenburg company is expanding from building yachts to commercial boats.
Covey Island Boatworks has already started production at Port Mersey Commerical Park near Liverpool.
President Al Hutchinson says the company is building large lobster boats to help meet demand.
“We’ve heard up to four year backlog at other commercial yards, so if a lobster fishermen wants a boat he’s on a list and he won’t get that new boat until four or five years down the road.”
Hutchinson says between six and eight workers will staff the new facility with plans to employ up to 20 people as production grows.
Three people have already been hired in the last 10 days.
“We’ve got 4,500 square feet now but there is more space that’s available that we can grow into.”
The company has built more than 90 custom vessels and also has a boat yard in Riverport.
